Importance of Website Analytics for Your Small Business Website

How much revenue did you make this quarter?  How many new customers did you acquire?  Is this an increase or decrease from last year?  What is the competitor doing?

In business, we are bombarded with measuring our successes and failures – it’s important because as an entrepreneur you are trying to grow and improve your business and it is a way to determine what is working and what isn’t.  If your main objective is not to grow or improve your business, I suggest you rethink your life as an entrepreneur! 

If you agree with my point above and you agree with the fact that a strong web strategy is important in helping this growth , then why do so many small business owners know very little about their website analytics?

Web analytics is the study of how your site’s visitors behave. This includes the tracking of important statistics (and fancy jargon for the “unwebified”) such as unique visits (UV), pageviews (PV), bounce rates and conversion rates.

So you just spent some of your marketing budget to develop your company’s website or redesign it, including integrating some sound SEO principles, you’ve paid attention to how to keep visitors on your site (by lowering your bounce rate) and you’ve put some thought on how your website strategy fits into your overall business goals, among other things.

But how do you know if all this effort into creating a strong website strategy is working?

Well, a great Toronto marketing and website development company (wink!) would have integrated a simple yet powerful analytics tool into your website and trained you on it.

Web analytics can tell you what pages are most popular (and least popular).  So, perhaps your business offers information on three products on your website but you find out that 90% of your visitors only view the content on Product 1?  Well, at the very least it this statistic suggests that you might rethink your product offering?  There could be many explanations, the point is, if you are not paying any attention to your web analytics, then, you won’t know to do anything – how do you grow your business?

However, reviewing your web analytics frequently is critical anytime you are running some marketing campaign, promotion and after an email blast.  It will help you measure how receptive potential customers are and if your offering is leading to an actual sale.
