Targeting Your Marketing Plan

June 12, 2012 by George Giantsopoulos Leave a Comment

You have an idea, you establish a small business and you even have a few sales right out-of-the-gate without much effort.  The sales give you some momentum but also distraction because when the sales die down you realize you don’t have a small business marketing plan in place to create new sales leads and grow your business.

This is very common trap that small business owners face; they ignore their small business marketing plan in the beginning, thinking “if you build it they will come”.

What follows is typically wasteful spending on a small business marketing plan that doesn’t have a clear goal.   This is the point when most small businesses contact a small business marketing consultant because there is a realization that there is a large gap between where they are today and where they need to be with regards to their sales.  They are not sure how to market their business and attract sales leads effectively and on a small business budget.

To overcome this, the first thing to do is perform a marketing planning exercise.  Basics that include one of the most important components of any marketing plan, defining your business’ target market.

This is critical but often overlooked.  The majority of small businesses are not selling to everyone, though they would like to think so.

The clearer you define your target market, the more time and money you are going to save in creating a marketing plan that gives your small business a positive ROI.  All of your marketing activity will be geared toward this target market. If your target market is off, then your results will be as well.

You need to break it down and spend time on this part of your marketing plan, consider some of the more common target market elements:

Geographic
Local
Regional

Demographic
Age
Gender
Race

Psychographics
Interests
Lifestyle
Education

If you nail your target market, you will be on your way to creating a profitable small business marketing plan that will produce profitable results.

Define your target market.  Grow your business.
